The biggest mistake that most people make when they
start their own business, or go into a new field, is that
they look around to see what others are doing and do
it, too.
That's why so many people have to try to build their
business on "low price." They have no way to
differentiate themselves. They run the same kind of
ads in the same publications, make the same offers
and provide the same service.
I hope I'm not describing you. You may think that
you're Number One in your market, but do your
customers think so? Let me share a lesson in
creativity and customer service.
A guy bought a Domino's pizza franchise in a
vacation area that was mostly a big lake surrounded
by summer homes. His main problem was that
driving the road all around the lake to deliver the
pizzas took too long. Out of his control, you
might say.
He felt differently. He decided to deliver by boat.
When he found that his delivery people had trouble
finding the right boat dock in the dark, he arranged
to install night lights and house numbers on every
boat dock - at his own expense!
Then he found that the boat motion was causing
the pizza sauce and topping to slosh around in
transit. So he and the Domino's technical team
developed a unique, gyro-stabilized pizza carrier
for the boat that kept the pizzas level.
Was he crazy to spend all that money? You be the
judge. He developed one of the top grossing
franchises in the whole Domino's network - making
more in his short summer season than most
franchises made in 12 months. All because he was
willing to think and act differently, to do what others
were unwilling to do.
This idea is introduced in "Science of Getting Rich"
in Chapter 6. Wattles calls it "use value" and you
find ways to apply it to your business and life. You
learn how to give everyone more in use value than
you take in cash value. It's the "Wow!" factor and it
can create fortunes.
Wattles says that when we provide more in use value
than we take in cash value that "we are adding to the
life of the world with every business transaction."
Wouldn't it be wonderful to know that you were doing
