How Not To Attract Customers
"Nobody cares about what you've got
to say unless it benefits THEM."
- - Mark Widawer
Internet marketer Mark Widawer has been doing
some articles on bad advertising and it's been fun
to read. Not because the bad examples are so
unusual, but because they're so common.
Pick up a magazine or newspaper right now and look
at the ads. Look for a clear, prominently placed
benefit statement that tells you what you get from
the advertiser. Not just a product, like "plumbing
supplies" but a benefit like "save $$$ on your heating
bills."
You probably didn't find too many. Most ads waste
most of the space with a pretty picture and a logo,
neither of which is of interest to the reader. For small
business this is a real problem because small
companies can't afford to waste money, and yet they
do - over and over again. Yellow pages, newspaper and
magazines, and flyers. Poorly designed and ineffective.
There are 4 components to a good ad - a strong,
compelling headline targeted to the customer, an
effective description of the benefits the customer
receives, a call to action (do something), and a
way to track response.
Tracking response is very important because without
it you don't know if the ad is working and you have no
way to test improvements. Successful advertisers do
what is called "split testing" which allows them to run
two similar but slightly different ads and measure
response. Over time they can make the ads very
effective.
For good ad techniques, look at what shows up in
your mailbox, particularly mailers for financial or
health newsletters. Look at the magazines at your
supermarket checkout. The text on the cover is
headlines designed to get you to pick them up.
Also, read the classifieds in the magazines, too.
When you go to buy an ad, usually the vendor will
offer to create an ad for you. If you don't take control
of that process, they will make an ad that's just like
all the other ads. Oh, you may have a different picture
and colors, but that's about it. A friend who used to
sell this kind of advertising confirmed that they had no
training in effective advertising, and they only cared
about selling the space and making it look pretty.
Keypoint - pretty doesn't sell!
So how do you learn to write effective ads? There
are tons of people online writing newsletters and
selling courses on this topic. You don't have to
work hard to find the information. You will have to
work to practice the craft and get good, though.
The good news is that since most advertising is
so bad, even a little good will be a big help to you.
Just remember to measure response, and test.
If you're in my Science of Getting Rich program
I can coach you on the process.

Remember, although it's nice to see your name
in print, nobody cares but you. Use your ad
space to attract customers, not to pad your ego.
Your pocketbook will thank you.
To your success,
Wes
