Dealing With Fear
"If you want to see new territory
you got to be willing to lose sight of camp."

As we launch out into 2008, many people have grand
visions for the new year, like they did last year, and the
year before. But most of them never materialize.
Why is that?
Why do so many of us end up at the end of the year
not very far from where we started? Well, there are 3
primary reasons for this (which we cover in detail in
Week 13 of Science of Getting Rich) but you can sum
it up by saying that new territory makes us very
uncomfortable. We get anxious, and fear, doubt and
worry keep us paralyzed. We take little baby steps
when giant leaps are what's needed.
I was thinking about this last night watching Donny
Deutsch's show on CNBC, "The Big Idea." BTW, this
show is a fabulous source of ideas and information
about success. Watch it! The show last night was
about overcoming fear, and featured several people who
had to overcome adversity and step way out of their
comfort zone to become successful.
The people included had dealt with family tragedies,
abuse, drug addictions and being offered promotions
that scared them. They all had moved forward to
success and relative celebrity status. Donny asked
them all the same question - what did you do to get
past the fear?
Their answers can be summed up in one statement
and two questions:
"No guts, no glory"
"What's the absolutely worst thing that can happen?"
"So what?"
But there was one important part that was left unsaid.
Each one of these people was driven by a vision. Not
just a wish, but a vision for themselves that gave them
a reason to confront their fears. Vision gives purpose
and motivation to life.
So the lesson they were expressing was this - first
get motivated by a clear and compelling vision. As
you confront obstacles, remind yourself, "no guts, no
glory." When you feel the fear as you confront unknown
territory, ask "what's the absolute worst thing that can
happen?" Usually the reality is much smaller than the
fear would try to make you believe. When you see
what the worst outcome could be, say "so what?"
"I might look like an idiot, or fail, or lose some money,
but so what? That's not fatal. What if I succeed?"
Don't let fear keep you stuck. If you want to make 2008
seriously better than 2007, you're going to have to start
with a powerful vision and then deal with the fear of
"losing sight of camp." So what? No guts, no glory.
