First Impressions

One of the fun things about writing these articles is that I see things to write about in all kinds of daily occurrences. Today I'm going to share a bad example of business practice. At the end I'll tell you what this has to do with self image.

If you're in business, you'd like to create an impression of competence and professionalism with everyone you meet, especially new customers. Here's how one company failed the test.

I needed to order a new set of Gratitude booklets that go with my Power of Gratitude audio program, so I decided to try a local printer. I took one of the booklets in and asked for a quote.

The clerk went to her computer and came back with a number written on a piece of scrap paper. No details, no itemization, just a number. I showed the existing booklet again and explained that it had to be good quality, folded, stapled and trimmed. She said, "Oh, you want it trimmed, too?" It's a good thing I mentioned it, because without an itemized quote, I didn't know what I was getting.

As you can imagine I'm not feeling too confident about this project at this point, but I decided to see how they would do. She said "a couple of days" for completion - again, not specific.

A week later, no one had called, so I had to call them. My wife had gotten some copies done there so I used the receipt she had, only to find that the phone number on their own receipt had a typo! Their website didn't work either, because their domain name had expired.

When I got the phone number and called, the guy that answered couldn't even find my order and had to call me back later and tell me it was in their other office and he had to go get it. Can you see the impression that this chain of events was creating?

Now, it's not all bad, because the outcome had some pleasant surprises. When I picked up the order, the clerk told me the order was late because she had sent the whole project back to be redone because the quality wasn't right. Very good initiative. It didn't speak well for the print shop, but at least the error got caught before I saw it.

What this company needs is a quote form, a process to keep the customer informed, especially if there is a delay, and a commitment to quality that reaches every employee. Fixing their contact information on their receipts would help, too.

Now what does all this have to do with you? If you're in business or not, the way you treat people is a reflection of your self image. A business will take on the belief system of the top dogs, and will attract employees who fit those beliefs. Good employees in a sloppy business will get sloppy, too, if their self image isn't strong.

Does your business have the training, systems and procedures to be consistently professional, specific and keep all commitments? If you're a business owner, do you know how customers are treated when you're not there? Famous sales guy Dan Kennedy says all business owners should have their company "mystery-shopped" on a regular basis to find out.

Of course, that implies that the business owner cares. And that comes back to self image, doesn't it?

How do you really see yourself? As competent and professional, keeping all your commitments? Is it true? Is it how you behave in your personal life? It won't happen in the outer world until it's true in your inner world, your self image.
