"A Simple Key To Success"

is worth a whole lot more than money."

Back in the 1970's I took a series of personal development
workshops led by an incredible teacher named Paul Larson.
It was really my very first step into discovering and claiming
my power, although I didn't know it at the time. In fact, I had
to be almost forced to go! (It's a great and not very flattering
story that maybe I'll write about on my blog sometime.)
There are a few key lessons that I learned that have stuck with
me and that I remember every time I violate them! Do you
ever do that? Do something and then remember "Jeeze, I
knew better than that!" Maybe it's just me.
One of those lesson was a simple statement that Paul made
when someone was complaining about the ground rules for
the workshops. He said, "Your life works to the extent that
you keep your agreements. Period."
In the 30 or so years since then I have had plenty of chances
to test this statement, and I am more convinced than ever
that it is a profound truth. In our relationships with others it
is the basis for building trust. it's easy to see - busted
agreements trash relationships, whether its in our business
or personal life. We want to know who we can depend on.
The biggest impact on our lives, though, is in how well we
keep our agreements with ourselves! When we don't keep
these agreements it trashes our self esteem, our self respect
and our self confidence. We become proficient with excuses
and our life does not work well at all.
As Jack Canfield says, "The real problem is not that people
give and break their word so easily; it's that they don't
realize the psychological cost of doing so."
Are you always late? Do you go on and off diets? Do you
complete projects when you say you will? Do you disappoint
your coworkers, your spouse, your kids? If so, here's what to
do.
Consider every agreement carefully and don't make it if you
don't intend to keep it. You may have to say no, or you may
have to negotiate, but be very clear about what you commit
to. There is NO law that says you have to agree to everything!
Write all your committments down! Then there is no mistake.
On the rare occasion that you know you will miss keeping
an agreement, notify the other parties and renegotiate as
soon as possible.
This one simple (but not easy) principle will have a profound
effect on your life and success. If you believe that this doesn't
apply to you, keep written records of your agreements for a
week or so and see how you're really doing. We have almost
infinite capacity to lie to ourselves about this.
I can almost hear somebody saying "All right, Wes, I'll
try it." Don't. In the immortal words of Jedi Master Yoda,
"There is no try, Luke. There is only do, or not do."
Commit to it!
