Do you have this problem? Deep down in your soul
you feel that there's a conflict between your desire to
be successful and your spiritual nature. That if you
really want to help people, make the world a better
place, preserve the planet, you've got to settle for
less in life than you really want for yourself and your
family. Does spiritual law really force you to make
that "either/or" choice?
That question is one that I'm going to talk about on
a f'ree teleconference next week. I'm getting
ready to launch the 2007 edition of "The 21st
Century Science of Getting Rich" and this program has
some astonishing things to say about spirituality and
riches. Are you being more virtuous by settling
for less than you want? Get the answer on this one hour

Lead Article
"What Are You Afraid Of?"
“Whatever course you decide upon, there is always
someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are
always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe
that your critics are right. To map out a course of
action and follow it to an end requires...courage.”
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson
So here we are in January again, a new year full of
possibilities. Everyone seems to be writing about
plans and goals and New Years Resolutions. But
hardly anyone writes about the most common reason
that we usually don't achieve our big plans.
No, it's not fear. I know from the title of this article
that you were probably expecting that, but fear itself
is not the reason. A little bit of fear can be a great
motivator. It can focus your attention. It can make
your victory even more satisfying.
Remember the first time you jumped off a high diving
board? The thrill of that jump was magnified by the
fear you felt as you looked down at that pool that
seemed to be so far, far away.
So what is the reason we don't follow through? I was
inspired to think about this by an article about country
music rising star Taylor Swift. At 16 she already has
a debut album released, and a hit single. But she
started even younger.
At 11, she sang the national anthem to open a
Philadelphia 76ers pro basketball game and started
showing up in music industry offices with a simple
pitch: "Hi, I'm Taylor, I'm 11 and I want a record deal."
How's that for a clear sense of purpose?
Naturally they all kicked her out and told her to come
back when she grew up. But she didn't stop.
Now at 16 she opens for big country acts with crowds
of 10,000 fans. What really impressed me, and led to
this article, was her answer when she was asked if the
crowds and fame intimidated her. "Not at all," she
replied, "I'm intimidated by the fear of being average."
Wow! " the fear of being average." That's when I
realized that the thing that stops us most of the time
is that we're afraid of the wrong things. We're afraid of
change, we're afraid of success, we're afraid of our
critics (see the Emerson quote), we're afraid of
venturing into the unknown with our big plans. What
if we took Taylor's advice and got really afraid of being
average instead?
For most people, average is comfortable, not scary.
I think of Earl Nighingale's famous quote, "Most
people tiptoe through life, hoping to make it safely
to death."
Most successful people have it the other way around.
They'll take the risks rather than stay average.
So what are you afraid of? We're all afraid of some
things, and it makes a huge difference what things
they are. Think about what your fears are. Make a
list. Make a decision. Choose wisely!
Let me close with another quote from Taylor. Talking
about how much of her own personal effort has gone
into making her career, she said, "I didn't come into
this to be baby-sat. If you have a calling and you're
ready for it, more power to you."
So look at your plans for 2007. Are they big enough
to be worthy of you? Do you have a calling and are
you ready for it?
Then more power to you!
To your success,
