"Real Life Success"

In business, like in sports, we have to master the fundamentals to be successful. Sometimes we get so fixated on the "latest and greatest" that we forget the importance of the basics.

In the "Science of Getting Rich" program that I teach there are 3 important fundamentals that are often neglected, yet they are a crucial ingredient to success.

1. In every transaction, see to it that everyone benefits and the deal creates the highest and best good for all.

2. When you sell something, give more in value than you get in cash. When you buy something, remember that you do not need to drive "sharp" bargains.

3. Provide a supportive environment for your employees so that they may improve and advance themselves if they wish to do so.

You may find these a little unusual, because not all companies behave this way. But the companies that do have a significant advantage.

I was reminded of this when I read of a speech given by Brian Kurtz, Vice President of Boardroom, Inc. This company publishes a wide array of financial newsletters and other products, all of which are marketed by direct mail. Boardroom is rumored to gross over 100 million each year and is one of the big dogs in the direct mail business.

Kurtz spoke at an industry function at which his company was receiving an award. He listed the key beliefs and principles that have guided the company since its beginning. You should take to heart what he says, whether you're a copywriter, a business owner, or anything else.

He said that everything they did is based on the fact that life is long - that they are in it for the long haul. This boiled down to three key points:

1. Life is long ... so strike business deals where everyone makes a reasonable-if not healthy-profit.

2. Life is long ... so treat your vendors like partners, not like your hired help. "It costs so little," Kurtz said, "and it's great being everyone's favorite client."

3. Life is long ... so treat all employees-past, present and future-like family. Give them your best, and they will give you their best.

Notice that he has pretty well summarized the points that Wallace Wattles made 100 years age. Is it possible that Marty Edelston, the founder of Boardroom, is an SGR student? Many very successful people are.

If these ideas seem too "touchy-feely" to you, remember that these are real strategies of a $100 million company. Sure, these are strategies that most businesses would call "impractical" or "idealistic" or "too much trouble." Maybe that's why most businesses aren't grossing over 100 mil.

Here's the principle behind these powerful ideas. The key is creation versus competition. The competitive mind see a world where there is not enough and where they have to fight for every dollar. The creative mind see abundance with more than enough everywhere, and therefore delights in treating customers, vendors and employees well.

To the competitive mind it looks like they are throwing money away, but in fact they are becoming a magnet for money. Customers love them, vendors love them, employees are standing in line to work there, and they can pick the best. They have the full creative force of the Universe on their side.

So here's the question to ask yourself about every deal: "Is this for the highest and best for everyone? Am I taking everyone's needs into account?" If not, fix it or walk away. Remind yourself that there is an abundance of deals that are right, so you don't need one that's wrong.

Make yourself a magnet for money in 2006!
