"By thought the thing you want is brought to you. By
action you receive it."
-- Wallace Wattles, "The Science of Getting Rich"
While our hearts go out to the people in the Gulf Coast
suffering from the hurricane, there is a good lesson in
this experience that you can apply to your quest
for success.
To set the stage, let me tell you about a TV documentary
I saw recently detailing the investigation of an aircraft
accident. As some of you know, I'm a pilot and worked for
years with aircraft systems, so I've very interested in why
things go wrong when they do.
In this accident, a passenger aircraft had taken off and
was climbing through 17,000 feet when one of the cockpit
windshields blew out. The resulting decompression of the
aircraft sucked the pilot out the window where he was
pinned to the aircraft by the 200 mph wind. A cabin crew
member was able to grab his feet and hold him with great
effort for the 20 minutes it took for the copilot to manage
to get the plane sucessfully back to the airport. Unbelievably
the pilot survived and no one else was seriously hurt.
Now here's the lesson from the accident investigation. They
quickly discovered that when the windshield was replaced
before the flight, the wrong size bolts were used, resulting
in the failure. The question was, how could an experienced,
trained and qualified mechanic use the wrong bolts?
The answer, they discovered, lay in a trail of decisions and
events, each one small and seemingly insignificant, that
permitted the mistake to happen. There were a total of
15 points in that chain of events where one little change
in the process would have prevented the accident. You
see, it IS the little things that count.
There is no doubt that the situation in New Orleans will be
found to be the result of the same kind of process. It's never
just one thing or one decision. There's always a chain.
So what does this have to do with your success? For the
answer, let me turn to Wallace Wattles and The Science
of Getting Rich. Here's what he said:
"If there is something that may be done today, and you
don't do it, you have failed in so far as that thing is
concerned and the consequences may be more disastrous
than you imagine. You cannot foresee the results of even the
most trivial act.
You don't know the workings of all the forces that have
been set moving in your behalf. Much may be depending on
your doing some simple act and it may be the very thing
which is to open the door of opportunity to very great
possibilities.
You can never know all the combinations which Supreme
Intelligence is making for you in the world of things and of
human affairs. Your neglect or failure to do some small
thing may cause a long delay in getting what you want."
It's the little things! Success is built in a chain just like
the disasters and to get what we want we have to put
together a chain of successful acts. To have a successful
year, we put together a majority of successful months. We
build these months out of successful weeks, build the weeks
out of successful days and, most importantly, build the
days out of a series of successful acts. That's where it
all happens.
So, what do you know you should do today that you're putting
off? It doesn't seem like much - just a phone call, just a little
task here and there. What difference can it possibly make?
Heck, I'll take care of that tomorrow.
Build a chain of days like that and you'll spend your whole life
wondering why success seems to elude you. Bob Proctor
likes to say that the world doesn't care what you know, it
only cares what you get done.
This doesn't mean that we have to do a week's work in a
day. We know, if we consult our intuition, what today's
work is. Make the call, write the email, start the project,
outline the book. We know when we're avoiding doing
today's work and we sometimes excuse it because it's
"just a little thing."
Not any more! Join me in a commitment to always
do Today's Work Today!
As Wattles says, "If every act of your life is an effective
one, then your whole life MUST be a success."

Mind Matters - Will
One of our important mental faculties is Will. This is a
function of the power of choice in our conscious mind, and
it is the faculty which enables us to keep our mind focused
on what we have chosen.
As you may have noticed, your mind is a thought machine.
It generates and processes thought at a mile a minute rate
and it's very easy to get distracted if you allow your mind to
run off after the 60,000 thoughts that you think per day.
This is where the will comes in. We use the power of the
will to keep our mind where we want it.
Have you ever been working on a project and noticed that
your mind was wandering? Have you ever found it difficult
to keep focused on what you wanted to do? Silly question,
isn't it? I know you've experienced that, because you're
human.
Here's how to strengthen your will - practice! It's just like a
muscle and will respond to exercise. You can do
concentration exercises, sitting and focusing your attention
on a spot, or a candle flame. Start at 5 minutes and work up
to 15 or 20 minutes, just strengthening your ability to hold
your attention on that object. If you're experienced with
meditation, this will be a lot easier than if you are not.
When you find your mind wandering when you're working, or
if you're getting distracted from your main task, call upon
your will and declare, "I'm using my will to stay on this task
until I'm done!" Then do it.
The payoff for strengthening the will is much greater
productivity. It's easier to do Today's Work Today
with the will on your side.
