"Quit Your Job Day"

One year after I was sacked, I called my former boss.
I said, “Ron, this is the first anniversary of the day you
gave me my walking papers.” There was a long silence
at the other end of the line. Then I said, “I just wanted
to call you up to thank you.” -- Peter Caroline
The summer solstice, the longest day of the year, is
coming up on June 21. What better date to become a
new holiday, Quit Your Job Day!
If your every workday has come to seem to be the
longest day of your life, if your every vu is deja, if you
can’t watch the movie “Groundhog Day” because it’s
just too slap-up-side-the-head real, then it’s time to
quit waiting to get fired, to put down the crappy Bic
office pen and just back away.
The quote we started with was from a letter Peter
Caroline sent me in response to a column about
having a party to celebrate getting fired. He explained
that he was downsized after 18 years at an ad agency,
during which time it went from “an exciting and
stimulating workplace to a corporate, Byzantine hell.”
He adds, “When the creative director called me into
his office and gave me the news, I said a silent,
‘Thank God!’”
Peter went on to start his own freelance
business, specializing in ads and articles for the
firearms field.
“I found a nice niche in which I could enjoy my hobby,
write about the major players in this pastime and
actually get paid quite handsomely for it. I am
almost 68 year old and I haven’t even considered
retirement. What would I do, play golf?”
Notice in Peter’s story that his work grew undesirable
not because he changed jobs or companies, but
because the company changed on him.
And even if the company didn’t change, he would
have changed as part of his own professional
maturation as well as his evolution as a human being.
The butterfly flaps his wings and the economy
changes, as does the industry, the company, the
profession, the professional and the human. What
are the odds that all of those evolutions are going
to move in concert?
It’s not going to get better.
The solution is, once again, the rugged individual,
made strong by the years of living under economic
martial law. If you're feeling like an old tube of Crest,
squeezed out, now is the time to find your niche,
starting today.
Then, come Quit Your Job Day, June 21, quit your
job, but don’t tell your boss. Make the decision, but
keep going through the motions of working.
Meanwhile, find a company that still cares about its
employees or else do what Peter Caroline did: find a
niche and turn your pastime into your career.
It’s not going to get better.
Do not remain calm.
Do not remain in your seat.
In this emergency, use the elevator.

Article #2 - Mind Matters - Work Beliefs
I remember as a child listening to my Dad talk
about his work day at the dinner table each
evening. Over the years there were a couple
of themes that recurred over and over. The primary
one can be summarized as, "Boy, those people
I work for are such idiots! Nobody above me in the
organization has an IQ above room temperature! I
spend all day dealing with their dumb ideas and
fixing their screwups."
The secondary theme was along the lines of, "Well,
they tried to pull a fast one on me today, but I out-
smarted them again!"
Notice that there wasn't much room for respect,
cooperation, shared goals, mutual appreciation or
a willingness to learn.
Today, of course, after studying people and their minds
I can recognize that my Dad's opinions told a lot more
about him than they did about his co-workers. But as a
kid, I didn't know that.
As we say in Goal Achiever, the baby's mind is wide
open and everything that a young child hears, especially
from an authority figure, goes right into the subconscious
mind as Truth and gets lodged as a belief.
Once it gets lodged as a belief, then, as we discussed
in the last issue, the subconscious goes to work to
make it true in our experience. My Dad's dinner table
talk created my beliefs about work.
So guess what I got for bosses when I went into the
work world? Yup, idiots! Do you think this was a
career-enhancing belief system?
Oh, I had a few good bosses, but the person above
them became the designated idiot in those cases.
And like many people in the places I worked, and like
my Dad, I attributed my unhappiness to others instead
of taking a good look in the mirror.
As James Allen said, "Our environment is but our
looking glass." What we see in our world is just
our beliefs staring back at us.
There are 2 main reasons that people are unhappy with
their work:
1. They have negative work beliefs inherited from parents
who were unhappy in their work and as a result believe
that being unhappy is all they can expect.
2. They are in the wrong work - it's not their passion.
We'll deal with this in another issue
So what were you taught about work? Do you believe
that it's unrealistic to expect to like your work? I had
people tell me very sarcastically, "Wes, that's why
they call it work!"
If you're unhappy with what you're doing, it might be
worth your time to write down everything you can
remember about your parent's beliefs and see how
they are showing up in your life.
Go back and read the quote from Wendy Craig-Purcell
at the beginning of the newsletter and visualize how things
might change for you if you started, in your mind, working
for yourself.
This is what she suggests you might find: "When you
consistently produce excellent work, and are willing to
give of yourself, something miraculous happens. You
wind up feeling better about yourself.... And because the
universe works according to Principle, one of two
additional things might happen. Either the environment
around you changes so you'll be rightly compensated
where you are, or you'll have earned the right to be
somewhere else, and the universe will open a new door
and provide a better opportunity."
To those of you familiar with the Science of Getting
Rich, that will echo what Wallace Wattles
recommends in Chapter 13, "Getting Into the Right
Business." Work on your current job with vision,
faith and purpose, and grow into something better.
Resolve today to quit the blame game and take
complete responsibility for your experience of work.
If you don't like what you've got, change it! Be aware
of all the mind chatter that tells you that you can't have
what you want, because that mind chatter is just your
old beliefs. And none of it is true!
